Clinical Outcomes Are Your Best Marketing: How O&P Clinics Turn Results into Referrals
3 min reading time
Your results are your strongest sales tool – if you can show them. A practical guide to measuring outcomes and turning them into referrals and repeat business.
Most O&P clinics grow by word of mouth. A surgeon is pleased with a result, a physiotherapist hears good things, a patient tells a friend. That works – until you want to grow faster than word of mouth allows. The clinics that grow steadily do one thing differently: they measure their results and show them.
Outcome data is not just a clinical nicety. For a clinic owner it is marketing material, a referral tool and, increasingly, what hospital purchasers and insurers expect to see.
Why outcomes are a growth lever
Referrers want confidence. A consultant who sees a clear before-and-after for their patients is far more likely to send the next one.
Patients want proof. Showing a patient their own improvement keeps them engaged, coming back for reviews and replacing devices with you.
Payers want justification. Objective measures make a funding or pre-approval request easier to support.
You need to know what works. Over a year, your data shows which devices, materials and protocols give the best results – and which cost you remakes.
Patient-reported: EQ-5D-5L (quality of life), PLUS-M (mobility) and the Socket Comfort Score.
Performance-based: the 10-metre walk test, Timed Up and Go, and the Amputee Mobility Predictor.
For orthotic and foot-health patients, add objective data such as plantar pressure and foot measurements and a simple pain or comfort score. Pick five or six measures at most, and use the same ones every time.
Step 2: Build them into the patient journey
Measures only help if they are collected consistently. Make them part of three fixed moments:
Assessment – the baseline.
Delivery or fitting – the immediate result.
Follow-up – a booked review a few weeks later, which also catches adjustments before they become complaints.
Give one team member ownership of the process and a one-page form. If it depends on the owner remembering, it won't happen.
Step 3: Turn the data into referral reports
This is where outcomes become growth. After each episode of care, send the referring doctor a short, one-page report: the patient's baseline, what you provided, and the follow-up results. Keep it visual – a pressure map or a scan comparison says more than a paragraph.
Every few months, pull the results together into a simple summary for your main referrers: how many patients, what kind of devices, and the average improvement. A clinic that can say "our patients improved their walking speed by this much" stands out from one that simply says "we make good devices".
Step 4: Use results with patients – and in your marketing
Show patients their data on screen at follow-up. It turns a technical appointment into a conversation and improves wear compliance.
With written consent, turn strong results into short case studies for your website and social media.
Use your aggregated numbers in tender and hospital partnership proposals.
Choose your measures, print the form, and collect them on every new patient for the next 30 days. Then send your first referral report. It's the cheapest marketing your clinic will ever do.
